Softball Runs Win Streak To Four With Sweep Of WVIAC Schools

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Kim Murl was a combined 4-for-7 with six RBI to lead West Chester University to a pair of softball wins at the NTC Spring Games in Florida Saturday. The Golden Rams defeated West Liberty, 7-3, and then topped Alderson-Broaddus, 8-0, in six innings.

West Chester (9-5) has gotten stellar pitching performances over its current four-game winning streak. Devon Utterback and Kate Skokowski have started to throw more consistently. However, Murl was the star on Saturday both at the plate and inside the circle.

Murl (2-0) tossed a complete-game, five-hitter. She allowed three runs and struck out a batter. She did not walk anybody. At the plate, her two-run single in the third inning put West Chester on top for good, 3-1. The Golden Rams added three insurance runs in the fourth to stretch the lead to 6-1. The two teams traded runs in the fifth, and West Liberty added another in the sixth.

Laura Altenburger had a run-scoring double in the fourth, and Ali Vavala and Kelly Anderson each added RBI singles to power that rally.

In the second game, Utterback (3-1) tossed a two-hit shutout while West Chester scored eight runs in six innings to end things early. She has not allowed an earned run in her last 13 innings pitched. She has not walked a batter in those 13 innings and has struck out 14 in the process.

Murl continued to swing a hot stick, going 3-for-4 with four RBI at the plate. J.P. Norris, Jill Murray and Anderson were each 2-for-3. Murray hit an RBI single. Anderson and Vavala each scored a pair of runs as well.

West Chester scored a pair of runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth to put an end to the game after six innings due to the mercy rule.

West Chester takes on Mercy College and Southern Connecticut State on Sunday, before heading back north.
