West Chester Drops Pair Of Games At Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – West Chester dropped both ends of a PSAC East softball doubleheader to host Kutztown University Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 in the opener and 10-2 in five innings in the nightcap.
 
West Chester (26-13, 4-6 PSAC East) fell into third place in the league standings while Kutztown (21-17, 6-4) moved into second place alone.
 
Devon Utterback tossed a two-hitter in the opener, allowing just one unearned run in the second inning. However, the Golden Rams could not get any runs across, leaving eight runners on base throughout the contest.
 
West Chester threatened in the seventh, but left two runners on baseKutztown’s shortstop made a diving stop of a ground ball in the hole and flipped to third to get an out and save what would have been a run.
 
Utterback (14-5) suffered the loss in the nightcap as well. She threw four innings and allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, on three hits. She walked three and struck out three. However, Utterback ran into trouble in the fifth, and Kim Murl and Kate Skokowski each came on in relief. But, Kutztown put up six runs in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead and end the game early.
 
Jill Murray was 1-for-2 with a two-run double in the top of the fourth at originally tied the game at 2-2. Kutztown answered with two of its own in the bottom half to take a 4-2 lead, before plating six in the fifth. Murl also had a double at the plate in game two.
 
West Chester returns home for a doubleheader against University of the Sciences on Monday afternoon.
