WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester could not come up with a clutch hit when it needed it most on Monday as visiting University of Sciences swept a non-league doubleheader from the Golden Rams by scores of 5-3 and 1-0 on South Campus.

West Chester (26-15) saw its losing streak reach four while USciences (20-12) pulled off its first doubleheader sweep over the Rams in the series history. The Devils 20 wins marks the first time in program history that the softball team has reached 20 victories in a single season.

In game two, the Golden Rams had runners on second and third with only one out while trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh. However, the next batter struck out and the final batter grounded out to end the game. Senior Devon Utterback (14-6) was the hard-luck loser inside the circle for West Chester. She threw a complete game, allowing one run on five hits while walking two and striking out three.

Cassie Lapotsky (11-4) went the distance for Sciences, tossing a four-hit shutout. She also came on to earn her second save of the season in game one. In that contest, West Chester left seven runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth inning and first and second in the sixth. Kelly Anderson hit a slicing fly ball to right field in the sixth that the Devils' right-fielder made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning.

Erin Quense hit her team-leading third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, in the fourth inning. Jess Schuck hit a RBI single in the fith. But, that was all the offense West Chester could muster.

Kate Skokowski (9-8) was a hard-luck loser in that contest as well. She threw 4.2 innings, surrendering five runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits.

West Chester must regroup before it travels to Shippensburg on Frida for a PSAC East doubleheader with the division-leading Raiders.
