WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Shippensburg’s Emily Estep tossed a no-hit shutout in the opener, and the Raiders held on in the nightcap to complete a PSAC Eastern Division softball sweep of a doubleheader on South Campus Friday afternoon.
West Chester (20-11, 2-4 PSAC East) dropped its first doubleheader of the year while Shippensburg (21-4, 4-0) remained unbeaten in league play. Kelly Anderson saw her 20-game hitting streak come to an end when the Golden Rams were no-hit in the opener.
Estep (10-2) struck out 11 West Chester batters in game one, and Shippensburg pushed across one unearned run in the top of the sixth and another tally in the seventh for the 2-0 win. The Raiders then held on to a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Makenzie Lynn (2) registered her first save of the year while Liz Parkins (7-0) collected the win.
Erin Quense hit her second home run of the season in the second game, which cut the visitor’s lead in half, 2-1. The Raiders had jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top half of the inning. Kim Murl’s double down the left field line in the fifth made it 3-2. But, the Golden Rams could not get the equalizer.
Anderson went 2-for-4 in the second game with a run scored. She hit a one-out single in the fifth, moved over to third on a single by Jess Schuck, and then scored on Murl’s double.
Quense finished the day 2-for-3. Megan Kelly had a bunt single in the sixth for West Chester’s only other base hit.
Devon Utterback (10-3) went the distance and suffered the loss in the opener. She allowed two runs on four hits, walked seven and struck out five. Only one of her runs allowed was earned. Kate Skokowski (8-7) was collared with the loss in the second game. She lasted just 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits. She walked two and struck out one. Utterback relieved her and went the rest of the way, yielding one run on five hits while walking one and striking out five more.
West Chester will be back in action on Monday with a non-league doubleheader against regional foe Chowan on South Campus at 2 p.m. That doubleheader was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m., but has been moved to a 2 p.m. start.
