QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – Cal scored five runs in the top of the fifth on the strength of two home runs as the Vulcans eliminated West Chester, 10-1 in five innings, from the 2013 PSAC Softball Tournament in the semifinals Friday afternoon at Veterans Park.
West Chester (34-19) will await the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament selection show on Monday morning at 10 a.m. on NCAA.com. Cal (34-3) takes on Bloomsburg in another elimination game at 4 p.m. at Veterans Park.
Devon Utterback (20-9) started, but did not get out of the first inning. She gave up four runs on two home runs, walked two and did not retire a batter. Kate Skokowski came on and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up six runs, five of them earned, on seven hits. Kim Murl finished up with the last out on one pitch.
West Chester scored its only run in the bottom of the first when Kelly Anderson reached on a fielding error by Cal’s shortstop and eventually scored from second on a single through the left side by Murl.
Cal’s Alex Sagl (18-2) went the distance inside the circle, scattering three hits and yielding just the one unearned run. She walked one and struck out five.
