WEST CHESTER, Pa. – What appeared to be the coming out party for two speedy freshmen forwards for West Chester, stunningly turned into a second consecutive loss. Mercyhurst scored three times in the final 20 minutes to come away with a 4-2 PSAC victory Friday afternoon in West Chester.
West Chester (1-2-0, 1-2-0 PSAC) controlled the play through most of the game and took a 2-1 advantage early in the second half, when freshman Maddy Barretti sent in Cara Deola who scored into an open net. Mercyhurst (2-1-0, 2-1-0 PSAC) on its heels most of the match trying to keep up with the deep and speedy Golden Rams, equalized in the 69
th minute on a header from Lauren Testa.
Testa scored the game winner, her second of the match on a free kick from 35 yards out, that appeared to be going over the net, but landed just under the crossbar with 10 minutes to play. Lakers put the game away on a scramble off of a corner kick with less than two minutes remaining.
West Chester opened the scoring when Barretti used her speed to beat her defender touch it over to Carly Yost who sent a cross to the wide open freshman Lexi Brown. Brown and Barretti dominated the first half with their speed creating havoc for the Lakers defense.
Alex Srolis made two saves in goal for West Chester; Ellie McDougal turned away six shots in net for Mercyhurst.
The Golden Rams look to get back to their winning ways, when Gannon visits for a 12 PM start tomorrow afternoon.
