GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Stef Pirri and Alexis Versak each scored two goals as top-ranked West Chester University opened its 2013 campaign with a 7-2 non-league victory over Adelphi on the road Friday afternoon.
West Chester (1-0) scored four goals in the first half to take a 4-1 lead by the break. Adelphi (0-1) briefly tied the game at 1-apiece. However, the Golden Rams rattled off three straight goals to get command of the contest early.
Lykens scored on a bullet from 10 yards out in the 14th minute. Adelphi's Mary Plotas tied things up two minutes later. But, Stef Pirri, Alexis Versak and Nancy Stehman each scored in succession.
After, Adelphi's Kristen Bagley made it 4-2 early in the second half, Pirri and Versak notched their second goals of the game back-to-back, and Megan Callanan finished out the scoring in the 54th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Krause (1-0) made four saves to record her first college win in the cage for the Golden Rams. Adelphi's Kelly Serrao was credited with 10 stops in the loss.
West Chester opens its home slate on Saturday afternoon against Lindenwood (0-1) at Vonnie Gros Field at 4 p.m. Lindenwood dropped a 7-0 decision at No. 4 Millersville Friday.
