No. 12 West Chester Tops IUP, 2-1

Box Score

INDIANA, Pa. – A pair of first-half goals were enough for the visiting West Chester Golden Rams to overcome host Indiana, Pa., 2-1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's soccer match Wednesday afternoon.

West Chester (9-1-0, 8-1-0 PSAC) shook off a disappointing overtime loss to East Stroudsburg in its last outing to remain unbeaten (6-0) on the road this fall. Indiana (Pa.) (7-3-2, 7-3-1) dropped its second consecutive league contest.

Maddy Barretti (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored her first career goal, heading in a rebound while on the ground in the 12th minute. Erica Hansen (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) blasted a shot that was originally saved by IUP goalkeeper, Jessica Printz. However, the ball ricocheted off her hand, hit the cross bar and deflected straight down to the ground where Barretti was lying.

Marissa Valenti (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) doubled the visitor's lead in the 34th minute when she kicked in a loose ball from about 10 yards out for her third goal of the season.

That is how things stood until the 64th minute when IUP cut their deficit in half. However, Alex Srolis (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) shut the door with the help of her back line the rest of the way. The Crimson Hawks fired off seven of their nine shots in the game during the final 45 minutes. But, Srolis (9-1-0) was only called upon to make one save in the win.

West Chester's defense, consisting of Erika Schrock (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff), Sara Bennis (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Carly Henry (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) allowed just two of IUP's shots to land on goal. They also yielded just one corner kick opportunity for the Crimson Hawks.

West Chester returns home on Saturday to face Clarion University at 12 p.m. at Rockwell Field.
