Big Sixth Inning Propels West Chester To Shortened Win Over West Virginia State

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C.  – West Chester scored eight runs in the top of the sixth, all with two outs, to break open its non-league contest with West Virginia State and cruise to a 13-1 victory in six innings at the Shaw Tournament at the Walnut Creek Complex Saturday.

West Chester (1-1) evened its record on the day with the win over a regional opponent. West Virginia State (1-1) was also playing its second game of the day.

A bases loaded triple by Megan Kelly was followed by a two-run single from Kelly Anderson. Erin Whitman also had a pinch-hit RBI single later in the frame as the Golden Rams pushed a 5-1 advantage to 13-1. West Virginia State went relatively quietly in the bottom half of the inning, and the game was called on the eight-run rule.

Freshman Micaela McSpadden (1-0) won her collegiate debut, going the distance on a five-hitter and allowing just one run. She walked two and struck out one. Both Kelly and Anderson finished with three RBI. Seven different Golden Rams were credited with a hit. Kelly scored three times while Ali Vavala and J.P. Norris each scored twice.
