RALEIGH, N.C. - West Chester University used a six-run seventh inning to capture a 10-4 victory over Shepherd University in its final game of the Shaw Tournament at Walnut Creek Complex Sunday morning.
West Chester (3-1) won its last three games at the 33-team tournament with all three coming against regional opponents. The Golden Rams were clinging to a slim 4-3 lead heading into the final frame when the bats came alive.
Jill Murray hit a two-run double and Erin Quense followed with a three-run home run to provide the spark for the big rally. Shepherd's pitcher walked three straight batters to set the stage for the big inning, and Murray and Quense delivered the punch.
Freshman Micaela McSpadden (2-0) picked up her second win in as many outings at the tournament. She allowed three runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out two in 5.2 innings of work. Only one of the nine hits she surrendered went for extra bases. Shepherd touched her for three runs in the sixth. McSpadden retired the order in three of the first five innings. Katie Erb (1) got the final out of the sixth inning, stranding the potential tying run at second base and then finished up the seventh inning for her first career save.
West Chester is back in action next Saturday and Sunday when the Golden Rams travel to Univ. of Virginia-Wise and Chowan for a pair of doubleheaders.
