MURFREESBORO, N.C. –West Chester University's softball dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon, 5-0, and, 6-2, to the University of Virginia at Wise as the two schools met for the first time on the campus of Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C.
The Golden Rams (3-3) mustered only a pair of singles in the opener,
Ali Vavala's single in the first and a single from
Erin Quense in the seventh. The Cavaliers (8-3) took advantage of an error to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first against starting pitcher
Katie Erb. It was all the runs Rachel Hawks would need as she pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout for the win.
UVA-Wise tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth when Allyssa Zebrowski homered following a West Chester error with two outs to make it 4-0. Another long ball in the fifth provided the final score.
Erb surrendered five runs, only two earned, allowed eight hits while striking out three in five-plus innings of work.
Sara O'Dell replaced her and pitched an inning of scoreless ball.
In the second game the scenario stayed the same as the Cavaliers jumped on O'Dell for two in the first and scored an unearned run the second to take a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Rams made it a contest by scoring its only two runs of the day in the bottom of the fourth to make it, 3-2.
A one-out single by
Jess Schuck started the rally.
Kim Begley came on to pinch run and an out later,
Kim Murl singled to put runners on first and third. Murl went to second on a wild pitch, and they both crossed the plate on a two-run single up the middle from
Megan Kelly.
The Cavaliers responded in the fifth with a lead-off home run of
Molly McSpadden to lengthen its lead to 4-2 and put the game away in the sixth with a pair of runs.
Taylor Brandts pitched a complete game for the victory.
O'Dell took the loss allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. McSpadden had a similar line going 2 2/3 giving up three runs, two earned, on three hits and a walk. Murl finished going 1 2/3 without allowing a run.
UVA-Wise outhit West Chester 11-4 in the second game and 19-6 in the doubleheader.
The Golden Rams play a doubleheader against host Chowan Sunday with the first game scheduled to start at 10 a.m. followed by a 12 noon second game.Â
