No. 23 West Chester Rallies For Doubleheader Sweep at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa - An Erin Quense two RBI single in the eighth was the difference in the opener and J.P. Norris went 4-4 in the nightcap, to lead No.23 West Chester University softball to a doubleheader sweep at Mansfield University Monday afternoon in PSAC East action at Helen Lutes Field..

The Golden Rams (28-13, 15-5 PSAC East) scored a come from behind 7-4 victory in eight innings in game one and captured the finale 6-2. The Mountaineers (15-9, 7-7 PSAC East) held a 4-1 lead with two outs in sixth, before an error opened the door for the West Chester comeback.

Norris and Megan Kelly walked to open the sixth, but Jess Schuck lined into double-play that seemed to short circuit the rally and West Chester, which dropped a doubleheader at Lock Haven on Sunday, appeared to be on its way to a third consecutive loss. Kim Murl reached on an error at 2nd base to bring up Kelly Anderson, who doubled into right center to score two and make it a one run game at 4-3. Jill Murray then tied the game with an RBI single through the right side.

The Mounties had chances to score in the sixth and seventh, but West Chester pitcher's Katie Erb and Kim Murl were able to get out of trouble and get the game to the eighth tied at 4-4.

Schuck led off the eighth with a double to left a Murl single moved pinch runner Sarah Derstine to third, after Murl stole second Anderson was walked to load the bases. Murray hit a grounder that forced Derstine at the plate to bring up Quense who delivered the tie breaking runs with a single through a drawn in infield into left field. Laura Altenburger added an RBI single to increase the lead to three and make the score 7-4.

Murl, who started and pitched into the fourth allowing four runs, returned to the game with one out in the seventh and pitched the eighth to close out the game and record her ninth victory of the season. Erb pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to keep the game tied. Mansfield used three pitchers in the game with Ashley Inman starting the eighth and suffering the loss.

In the nightcap, Murl brought home Kelly to give West Chester a 1-0 lead in the first, Quense then bombed her fifth home run of the season with Murray at first to make it a 3-0 game in the second. The Golden Rams added two more in the frame to make it a 5-0, with Schuck driving in the fifth run.

Micaela McSpadden pitched the first two innings, but was relieved by Murl who pitched the final five to pick up her tenth win of the year and second on the day. Emily Crandell started and was tagged with the loss for Mansfield.

West Chester swept four tight games over Mansfield in 2014. The first two were at South Campus field with the Golden Rams wining by identical 3-2 scores.

The Golden Rams travel to PSAC East rival Millersville on Friday for a doubleheader with the Marauders. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
