No. 4 Field Hockey Rallies for 5-3 Win over Mercyhurst

Box Score West Chester, Pa. - Marnie Kusakavitch (Pittston, Pa./Holy Redeemer) scored twice and Dayle Paustian (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) provided the game winner to lead No.4 West Chester University to a 5-3 win over Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday evening on a rain soaked Vonnie Gros Field.

The Golden Rams (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) opened the scoring on a solo effort from Alayna Brown (Telford, Pa. / Souderton) less than three minutes into the game, and increased the lead to 2-0 at 3:11 mark on a goal from Kuskavitch off a rebound of a Rachel Toppi (Glassboro, N.J. / Glassboro shot. The Lakers (2-2, 1-1 PSAC) responded with a pair of goals by Blair Pembleton to even the contest going into the second half.

Mercyhurst coming off a 12-11 win over No. 9 Indiana, Pa. on Tuesday, took the lead early in the second off a corner just under seven minutes in. West Chester responded as Kusakavitch tied the contest at 3-3, with her sixth of the year, off a feed from Mary Spisak (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs) about 90 seconds later.

Paustian scored on a solo effort to put the Golden Rams back on top in the 49th minute and  Alexis Versak (Limerick, Pa. / Spring-Ford) restored a two goal margin making it 5-3 and completing the scoring.

Audree Bonavita (Collegeville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley) was credited with three saves in registering her third victory of the season. Laker keeper Jess Wess stopped 13 shots in falling to 2-2 on the year.

West Chester heads to the road for its next four contests beginning on Wednesday with a 4 PM start at Mansfield.
