No. 9 West Chester Shuts Out No. 21 Gannon, 2-0

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. - Freshman Marissa Valenti (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) scored a pair of goals in the first half, and visiting West Chester held on for a 2-0 victory over 21st-ranked Gannon, in a PSAC women's soccer match on the road Saturday evening.

West Chester (6-0, 5-0 PSAC) remains unbeaten on the season, after taking both games in Erie this weekend. The Golden Rams defeated Mercyhurst Friday afternoon. Gannon (3-4, 3-3) dropped its third straight and fourth in its last five.

Valenti headed in a cross from Carly Yost (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) in the 23rd minute, scoring her first career goal. Her second goal came off a goal kick from West Chester goalkeeper Alex Srolis (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East), who found Erica Hansen (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) around midfield. Hansen headed the ball on to Valenti, who went in all alone on a breakaway for her second tally of the afternoon.

That was all Srolis would need as she made four saves to record the shutout win in goal. She also picked up a point with her first career assist. It was the first point recorded by a West Chester goalkeeper in over seven years.

West Chester held a 14-12 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Golden Rams return home on Wednesday to face Lock Haven in a doubleheader with the men's team beginning at 2 p.m.
