Women’s Swimming Way Out In Fron On Day One Of Season Opener

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Tess Hayward (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) won the 200-yard freestyle and swam a leg on three relays to help West Chester's women's swimming & diving team open up a big lead after day one of its season-opening tri-meet at Graham Natatorium Friday evening.
 
West Chester, Southern Connecticut State and Shippensburg are all in the pool this weekend, lifting the lid on the 2015-16 campaign. The Golden Rams are way out in front of both the Owls and Raiders heading into tomorrow's final day. West Chester has 134-44 lead on So. Conn. State and a 124-50 lead on Shippensburg.
 
West Chester's women captured first place in nine of the 10 events Friday.  In fact, the Golden Rams took both first and second place in four of those events.
 
Hayward touched the wall in 1 minute, 57.08 seconds to capture the 200 free. Freshman Sydney Wareham (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) was right behind her in 1:59.68. Dani Barron (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) won the 500 free in 5:19.18 while Lovisa Nyman (Umea, Sweden) was second in 5:21.99. Nyman (4:53.65) was also runner up to fellow countrywoman Emelie Johansson (Taby, Sweden) (4:39.00) in the 400 individual medley. Abigail Buckley (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan Aberdeen) won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.58 while Elizabeth Miller (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) was right behind in 1:02.31.
 
Buckley, Johansson and Hayward teamed up with freshman Felicia Grego (McAdoo, Pa./Hazleton) to win the 200 medley relay in 1:52.58. Hayward and Miller teamed with Emily Stang (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Kellen Redcay (Reading, Pa./Wilson) for a win in the 200 free relay (1:41.42). Wareham, Stang, Nyman and Hayward was the foursome that won the 800 free relay in 8:00.59 for the Rams.
 
Kailyn Beil (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 199.35.
