Softball Opens PSAC Tournament Play Thursday Morning Against IUP

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – West Chester University's softball squad takes on Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the first game of the double-elimination PSAC Tournament held at Veteran's Park on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
 
Tickets are $10 per day, and are free for children 12 and under. College students, who present a valid PSAC ID, are also granted free admission.
 
West Chester earned the top seed out of the Eastern Division and is making its sixth consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament. The Golden Rams posted a 22-6 record in their division, and finished 38-12 overall.
  
The Golden Rams possess some strong hitters going into the PSAC Tournament. Erin Whitman leads West Chester with 56 hits and 41 RBI. Ali Vavala leads the squad with a batting average of .396. Meanwhile, Laura Altenburger, who was named the PSAC East athlete of the year, tied for the team lead with seven home runs this spring.
 
Left-handed starting pitcher, Amanda Houck, started 19 games on the mound, coming out with 18 wins. Houck has pitched 151.2 innings, and struck out 75 batters. She was named the PSAC Eastern Division pitcher of the year and freshman of the year.
 
West Chester is currently ranked third in the latest NCAA Atlantic Region Poll. The NCAA Tournament begins play after the PSAC Tournament concludes.
