West Chester Sweeps Shepherd

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Erin Whitman (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) hit a towering walk-off home run in game two that capped a five-run sixth inning for West Chester and sent everyone home early while putting an exclamation point on a non-league doubleheader sweep over visiting Shepherd University Wednesday.

West Chester (24-10) picked up a pair of Atlantic Region wins with a 5-0 blanking over Shepherd (11-12) in the opener and a 15-6 win in the nightcap on a cold and rainy afternoon on South Campus.

Whitman's second home run of the game and fourth of season was a two-run shot down the right field line that put the hosts ahead by nine, invoking the eight-run rule after five innings that halted the contest. Haley Taylor (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) hit a pinch-hit, two-run double earlier in the frame while Ashley Flesch (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) singled in a run in a pinch-hitting role as well.

Whitman finished 3-for-5 with four RBI while Micaela McSpadden (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) went 3-for-4 at the plate as well while also picking up the win inside the circle, after relieving starter Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) in the first inning and throwing 3.2 innings for her first win of the season. Katie Erb (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) came on in the fifth to get out of a jam and pick up her second save of the year.

In the opener, Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) threw a complete-game, two-hitter for her fourth shutout on the season. Laura Altenburger (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) and Erin Quense (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning to support Houck offensively.

West Chester returns home on Friday for a PSAC doubleheader against Millersville on Friday beginning at 2:30 p.m.
