Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Golden Rams used a combination of superior pitching and timely hitting to sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Barton College (3-6) on Saturday afternoon in Murfreesboro, N.C by scores of 4-0 and. 9-0 (5 inn.).
In game one, Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) was lights-out inside the circle. The sophomore pitcher tossed her second complete game and first complete game shutout of the season to improve to 3-0 on the mound. Harner struck out nine Barton hitters without allowing a walk.
After stranding seven base runners through the first three innings, the Golden Rams got on the board in the top half of the fourth. Monica Twardowski (Boothwyn, Pa./Padua Academy) led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, freshman Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa/Avon Grove) knocked in Twardowski with an RBI single.
WCU would add another run in the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of senior Laura Altenburger (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) to extend the lead to 2-0.
Herion touched them all in the top of the sixth with her fourth home run of the season. WCU would tack on another run to go ahead 4-0.
Herion went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot with two runs batted in and a run scored. Twardowski was 2-for-2 with a run scored. Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) recorded her sixth and seventh stolen bases of the season.
In game two, WCU scored nine runs on eight hits, and were aided by six Barton errors.
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) was equally as untouchable for the Rams in game two. Houck (4-0) allowed a lone hit in the third inning en route to her third complete game shutout of the 2016 season. Houck struck out nine and allowed one walk.
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) scored three of WCU's nine runs. Ercolani reached base on all three plate appearances and added a stolen base.
Kelly went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.
Micaela McSpadden (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) added two RBI's for the Golden Rams.
West Chester will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Chowan University. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
