West Chester Sweeps Chowan; Extends Win Streak To 10

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – West Chester picked up a pair of victories against Chowan University on Sunday afternoon by scores of 10-4 and 2-1 to improve to 10-0 on the season.

Chowan (4-7) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. However, Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) was called into the game in a relief role and went 5.1 innings to pick up her fourth win of the year. Harner (4-0) allowed two runs, one earned, on three walks and three hits. Harner struck out six Chowan batters.

In game one, WCU scored 10 runs on 13 hits. Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) and Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) combined to go 6-for-10, each collecting three hits. Herion scored three times and knocked two runs in. Kelly scored twice and added two more stolen bases.

The Golden Rams stole seven bases as a team in game one.

West Chester wasted little time in game two. Herion led off the game with her fifth four bagger of her freshman season.

Chowan would eventually tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. However, the Golden Rams would score the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth.

Lexi Trumbetti (Burlington Twp., N.J./Burlington Twp.) entered the game as a pinch runner, stole second base, and scored on a Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) groundout.

Hammer was also huge in halting a late comeback bid by Chowan in the bottom of the seventh. Chowan led off the inning with a single and moved the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out and the tying run on second base, Chowan attempted to steal third base. Hammer gunned down the would-be base stealer for the second out of the inning to stop the threat.

Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) (5-0) went the distance on the mound in game two for her fourth complete game of the season. The sophomore pitcher allowed one run on seven hits. Houck struck out six Chowan batters.

The Golden Rams will take a flawless 10-0 record to Clermont, Fla. for their Spring Trip where they will play 12 games in seven days. WCU opens the Spring Trip with a split doubleheader on Saturday, March 5 against Saint Rose (5 p.m.) and No. 24 Southern Indiana (7 p.m.).
