KUTZTOWN, Pa. – West Chester's softball team scored a pair of 5-1 victories to conclude the regular-season with a sweep over host Kutztown Golden Bears inside North Campus Field Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Rams finished 47-5 (.904) overall, which is the best regular-season record in school history, while posting a 14-2 conference record that clinched first place in the Eastern Division and the No. 1 seed out of the East for the upcoming PSAC Tournament. Sophomore pitcher
Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, PA / Kennett) ended the regular-season at 19-1, after striking out five and walking only one, while giving up a single run in six innings.
Both teams were scoreless heading into the sixth inning until freshman
Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) came up with the bases loaded and smashed a grand-slam on a 1-1 pitch to give WCU a 4-0 lead. It was her only hit in game one.
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown East) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles, a walk and a run scored.
Then, in game two with the game knotted up at 1-1, two outs and the bases-loaded in the top of the seventh,
Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa. / Minersville) was down 0-2 in the count, before getting a piece of a pitch and sending it towards left center for a double and two RBIs to break the tie. Teammate
Cat Hamer (Philadelphia, Pa. / Archbishop Ryan) added a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, including a solo homer back in the second inning.
Kutztown's Tamara Jennings went 1-for-3 in game two with a RBI and stolen base.
West Chester now awaits its opponent heading into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament, which will get under way on Wednesday April 27 at Veterans Park in Quakertown, Pa. The Golden Rams will play the No. 2 seed out of the West at 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
