Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Stuns No. 1 Shippensburg, 1-0; Advances to PSAC Final

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - So., M Caitlin Kelly (Coatesville, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) provided the game winner to propel No. 7 West Chester (14-6) past No. 1 Shippensburg (14-4), 1-0, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinal this afternoon. The victory advances the Golden Rams to the PSAC Final on Sunday in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

How it Happened
  • Kelly registered the game winner at the 19:07 off a deflection from three yards out that beat Shippensburg's Ally Mooney.
  • This marks the second consecutive game winner that Kelly has contributed this week. The other came in the quarterfinal in a 1-0 victory over Bloomsburg on Tuesday.
  • Credited with the assist on the play for West Chester was Kaitlin Hatch (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.).
  • Jr., GK Marissa Elizardo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) preserved the 1-0 win to tally her fifth shutout of the season and her second of the PSAC tournament.
  • Shippensburg's attack was in full effect to begin the second half, but freshman Caitie McNamara (Buderim, Australia / Nambour Christian College) contributed a pair of defensive saves to keep the lead. Both of the defensive saves occurred on a pair of Lauren Zengulis shots at 43:12 and 43:20.
  • Elizardo made five saves in 70 minutes of action, while McNamara tallied a pair of defensive saves to register seven total for the team.

Inside the Numbers
  • Both teams were even in terms of shots at 18 apiece. However, West Chester held a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Shippensburg outshot the Golden Rams in the second half (10-7), who held onto the shutout.
  • The Raiders managed a 12-11 edge in penalty corners.
  • Mooney produced nine saves for the top ranked Raiders, but the one goal surrender proved to be enough for West Chester.

Notes/ Next Up
  • The Golden Rams have now won both the PSAC quarterfinal and semifinal by a final score of 1-0. Kelly registered both goals, while Elizardo generated the pair of shutouts.
  • West Chester is now 9-4 in the PSAC tournament since making the move to NCAA Division II in the 2011 season. They are aiming for their third conference title with the previous two coming in 2012 and 2014.
  • West Chester takes on the winner of Millersville and East Stroudsburg. The PSAC Championship is set for Sunday, November 5th at 1 p.m. in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
