Softball Comes From Behind To Edge Rollins, 6-4

Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. – West Chester scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind and defeat Rollins, 6-4, at the E.C. Moore Complex as part of the NFCA Leadoff Classic Saturday night.

West Chester (2-0) took advantage of a pair of errors, sending all nine batters in the order to the plate, before the damage was done. Rollins (3-3), coming off a 4-2 win over Tiffin earlier in the afternoon, could not hold its two-run lead in the Golden Rams' final at bat.

Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) singled back to the box to lead off the fateful frame. Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa./Minersville) reached on a fielders' choice when Kelly was thrown out at second base on Wally's grounder to second. Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) then singled up the middle, pushing Walasavage over to third with one out and runners now on the corners.

Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) followed with an RBI ground out to third base that plated Walasavage, making it a one-run ballgame (6-5) with two down and Ercolani on second. Alyssa Herion (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) was intentionally walked to load the bases. That is when Micaela McSpadden (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) delivered a two-run, game-winning double to left-center sending home both Ercolani and Herion. Monica Twardowski (Boothwyn, Pa./Padua Academy) pinch ran for McSpadden and made her way around the bases thanks to a pair of errors from the Tars' second baseman.

The Golden Rams' four-run rally in the seventh made a winner out of Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster) in her collegiate pitching debut. Maseth (1-0) came on in relief and tossed the final 2.1 innings of scoreless ball. She surrendered a pair of hits while striking out one. She did not walk anybody.

Ashley Flesch (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) started the game and threw three scoreless innings. She allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. West Chester was clinging to a 2-0 lead when Flesch left the game.

Rollins made its comeback in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings with a pair of runs in each frame. That put the Tars on top, 4-2.

Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) went 2-for-4 with a run scored in her college debut. Ercolani also finished 2-for-4 in the night cap. Hammer and McSpadden each registered a pair of RBI.

West Chester battles Catawba (N.C.) Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., before taking on Trevecca Nazarene Saturday night at the E.C. Moore Complex.
