WEST CHESTER, Pa. –
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) tossed a six-inning no-hitter in game one, but PhilaU's Naomi Stas was just as impressive in the nightcap as West Chester split a non-league softball doubleheader on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (20-6) rode the left arm of Houck to an 8-0 win in six innings in the opener. However, the Golden Rams saw their 11-game winning streak come to a close in the second game, 2-1. Philadelphia University (8-11), starting pitcher, Stas, scattered four hits, yielding just one run in the second game.
It marked the second no-hitter of the week for Houck (13-2), who threw a five-inning perfect game against Wilmington University on Thursday. She walked just one while one Rams hitter reached on an error for the only two opponents to reach base against Houck.
Heidi McCollester (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that ended the game early, making her first collegiate home run a walk-off of sorts.
West Chester's eight- and nine-hole hitters combined to go 4-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) scored twice and knocked in a run while
Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) doubled twice and recorded a pair of RBI. The Golden Rams plated two runs in the first, three in the second and two more in the third to jump out in front, 7-0.
In the nightcap, Stas (5-2) held her no-hit bid for 3.1 innings, before surrendering a hit to
Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa./Minersville). She struck out nine and did not walk a batter in the win.
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) went 2-for-3 with the lone RBI for West Chester in the second game. Starting pitcher,
Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) lasted four-plus innings, giving up one unearned run on six hits while striking out four.
Ashley Flesch (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) finished up the rest of the way, surrendering one run in the top of the seventh that broke a 1-1 tie.
West Chester hosts Chestnut Hill Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. on South Campus.
