WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University swept both ends of a PSAC East doubleheader on the road at East Stroudsburg Monday afternoon, taking game one by a score of 3-1 and game two by the measure of 3-2 at Zimbar Field.
The Golden Rams won the opening of game one of the doubleheader with two RBI's in the fifth that led to a 3-1 verdict. During the second game, the Golden Rams held off the Warriors' late rally to take the 3-2 win.
West Chester (24-6, 2-0 PSAC East) swept its PSAC rivals as well as opening up regular-season league play with a pair of wins.
The Golden Rams found themselves trailing in the bottom of the first inning of game one as East Stroudsburg's Madison Vicendese scores the first run of the game. Freshman
Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./ Westminster) scored a run in the top of the second off of an error by the third basemen to knot things up at 1-all.Â
Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa./ Minersville) reached base during the fifth, and
Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa./ Avon Grove) hit a two-run homer to left field that staked West Chester to its 3-1 lead. From there, it was all
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley), who tossed a complete-game to improve to 15-2 on the year. She allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out two.
During the nightcap, West Chester scored early as
Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./ Lampeter Strasburg) singled up the middle in the top of the first inning and would later score when
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./ Downingtown East) knocked her in. Herion homered to the left center during the second for her second home run of the day.
East Stroudsburg found two runs in the third to tie the game and chase starter
Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett).
In the top of the fifth,
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./ Archbishop Ryan) knocked home
Walasavage with the eventual game-winning run. Houck came on in relief of Harner during the third inning and finished up to improve to 16-2 overall on the year inside the circle. She tossed 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out three.
West Chester will be on the road Friday afternoon when it travels to Millersville University for another conference doubleheader.
