No. 14 West Chester Uses Second Half Magic to Defeat St. Thomas Aquinas

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- In what was the teams final non conference game of the year the No. 14 West Chester University men's soccer team (11-2-3) remained home today to square off against St. Thomas Aquinas College (10-4-1) in a game with potentially major postseason implications. West Chester used a pair of goals in the final five minutes of regulation to secure an emotional 3-2 non-conference victory over its guests.

How it Happened:

  • In the 18th minute, Saint Thomas got out to an early 1-0 lead after Alejandro Cameo touched ball over to Luis Morales who promptly finished to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead.
  • In the 54th minute, West Chester answered back when Stephen Thompson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) hit a rocket from the top of the box to even the score at 1-1.
  • The game did not remain tied for long as Morales and St. Thomas Aquinas answered back via a PK to reclaim the 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes left to play.
  • The game was far from over as Shane Hartey (Runnemede, N.J./Triton Hall) scored on a header near the far post on an assist from Doug Goitia (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) to even the game at 2-2 in the 87th minute.
  • In the 89th minute, Jason Pixley (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) scored his team-high seventh goal and fifth game-winning goal of the season finishing off a picture-perfect Daniel Grindrod (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) free kick to give West Chester the 3-2 lead.

Inside the Numbers:

  • In the first half, West Chester out shot although St. Thomas Aquinas held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal and the 1-0 lead. West Chester also  held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks at the end of the first half.
  • At the end of the game, West Chester held a slight 15-10 edge in shots although its guests still managed to maintain a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. West Chester also ended the contest with a commanding 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Will Marshall (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) ended the contest with four saves while his counterpart Jack Nicholson made just one save in the loss.
  • West Chester is now 6-0-1 in the month of October outscoring its opponents 19-5 over that stretch.

West Chester will take to the road on Saturday afternoon traveling to Seton Hill for a 2:30 p.m. start.
