Women's Soccer Draws with West Virginia Wesleyan; Falls in PKs 4-3

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Seeking to make a return trip to the Atlantic Regional Final the No. 2 seeded West Chester University women's soccer team (13-4-3) squared off against No. 6 seed West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats (13-1-5) on a sunny but chilly Sunday afternoon. West Chester and West Virginia Wesleyan battled all game long but neither side could score in regulation or in overtime, thus, sending the game to penalty kicks where West Chester fell 4-3 to bring its 2018 season to a close.

In the first half, each side had its opportunities as West Chester took seven shots while its guests took five but none of these shots managed to find their way into the back of the net.

In the second half, it was more of the same as West Chester took 11 shots and West Virginia Wesleyan took four but once again neither side could generate a goal. Perhaps the best opportunity of the day came late in the second half when West Chester got a ball deep into the box near the far post where it bounced around but somehow the ball stayed out of the goal to keep the game scoreless.

In overtime, the only scoring opportunities came during the first period as neither side managed to get a good look at the goal in the second overtime, which sent the game to penalty kicks.

For the second game in a row for West Chester and third time for West Virginia Wesleyan PKs proved to be the difference as the Bobcats picked up the 4-3 PK victory to advance to the regional final and end the Golden Rams season. Hannah Grandell (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), Jesse Magee (Bucks County, Pa./Council Rock South), and Kaitlyn McFadden (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) all buried their PKs but West Virginia Wesleyan went a perfect 4-for-4 in their opportunities to advance.

West Chester ends its season with a record of 13-4-3 overall and 11-4-1 in PSAC play. The West Chester senior class ends their careers with a record of 63-12-8 with one NCAA Regional Title and two PSAC Regular Season Championships to their credit.
