West Chester Sweeps Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.- One day after clinching its fifth straight PSAC East title thanks to Shippensburg sweeping Millersville the West Chester University softball team took to the road to wrap up its regular season schedule against Millersville on Saturday afternoon. West Chester took game one 4-0 before mother nature stepped in and caused game two to be suspended with West Chester up 5-0 in the bottom of the third. West Chester ultimately won game two 5-0 once play resumed on Sunday afternoon.

Game One WCU: 4 Millersville: 0
  • West Chester jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of play, when Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) singled home Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep).
  • In the seventh, Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) doubled to left to score Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) giving West Chester the 2-0 lead. This lead grew shortly thereafter thanks to a sac fly from Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) that scored Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), thus, giving West Chester the 3-0 lead. Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) was next as she singled through the left side to score Herion and give West Chester the 4-0 lead.
  • Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) got the start and went the distance scattering just one hit while striking out five to improve to 23-3 on the year. Cassidy Pinchorski (8-6) got the start for Millersville and took the loss going six innings surrendering nine hits and two runs (both earned) while walking two and striking out one. Emma Bevard entered in relief for the final inning and surrendered three hits and a pair of earned runs over the course of her inning of work.
Game Two: WCU 5 Millersville 0
  • West Chester jumped out to an early lead in game two scoring five runs in the second inning of play. Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster) got things rolling as she drove in the first two runs of the inning with a two-RBI double down the left field line scoring Hartman and Hammer to take the early 2-0 lead. Heidi McCollester (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) kept things rolling for West Chester as she singled up the middle to score Maseth and give West Chester the 3-0 lead. Garber followed this up with an RBI single of her own to score McCollester and give West Chester the 4-0 lead. This four-run outburst closed the book on Millersville starter Cat Johnson who lasted just 1.2 surrendering five runs on five hits.  Briana White entered in relief of Johnson and promptly allowed Garber to score thanks to an RBI single from Kelly, which gave West Chester the 5-0 lead.
  • After the top of the third, the rains came, and this pushed the game into a rain delay, which ultimately caused play to be suspended in the third inning of play.
  • When play resumed on Sunday afternoon it was more of the same as Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) continued to stymie the Millersville offense to help West Chester pick up the 5-0 victory over the Maruarders. Harner pitched a complete game for the second time this week surrendering just four hits and two walks while striking out eight to improve to 2-0 on the year.
West Chester will be back in action on Wednesday night in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament at 6 p.m.
