WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Tatum Altman (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) scored four goals, and Sami Barnett (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) added three others as 12th-ranked West Chester downed visiting Gannon, 20-3, in a PSAC women's lacrosse contest at Vonnie Gros Field Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (11-0, 6-0 PSAC) went on a nine-goal run in the first half to break a 1-1 tie and led 14-2 by the break in the win. Gannon (3-5, 2-4) knotted the score early on, but could not keep pace with the hosts the rest of the way.
Barnett notched her 100th career tally in the first half. She finished with four points altogether. Altman finished with five points on the afternoon. Eleven different Golden Rams scored in the contest.
West Chester controlled the game by winning the majority of draw controls early on. Altman's 29th goal of the season 19 seconds into the game. Gannon tied it up briefly. However, the Golden Rams took control after that, scoring 15 of the next 16 talllies, including the first two of the second half.
West Chester won 15 of 23 draw controls and forced Gannon into 24 turnovers. The Golden Knights were successful on just 6 of 16 clear attempts in the game. All of those factors contributed to the visitors taking just six shots in the game – the lowest allowed by West Chester in a game since Holy Family attempted just five a year ago.
Julianne Clemens (Springfield, Pa./Springfield-DELCO) got the win in the cage to improve to 7-0 on the year. Nicole Martins (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) came on in relief in the second half and made three saves. Gannon's Erin Renwick was credited with 13 saves.
So., defender Molly Reinhart (Sinking Springs, Pa./Wilson) scored her first career goal when she intercepted an outlet pass from Gannon's keeper off a failed clear and raced in all alone.
Maggie Stella (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Alex Wendig (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) each scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to finish with three points.
West Chester travels to Shippensburg on Wednesday for its next matchup. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
