No. 12 West Chester (6-1-1, 5-1-1 PSAC) enters off an exciting upset victory over its rival No. 11 Kutztown, which catapulted West Chester from seventh in the PSAC standings up into second. West Chester will be looking to continue its winning ways on Saturday morning against the Edinboro Fighting Scots. West Chester is 8-2 all-time against Edinboro with its last loss coming back in 2015 when West Chester fell to Edinboro by a final score of 2-1 inside Rockwell Field.
West Chester got off to a hot start in 2018 as the Golden Rams won five of their first six games with the other result coming via a tie against East Stroudsburg on the road in the season-opener. During its five game winning streak West Chester outscored its opponents by a margin of 11-0 thanks in part to a 542 minute shutout streak. West Chester saw this streak come to a surprising conclusion with a narrow 1-0 defeat on the road at the hands of the Bloomsburg Huskies. West Chester got right back on track against PSAC rival and fellow top-25 team Kutztown when West Chester won by a final score of 1-0.
Linzi Wolfe (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) provided the offensive firepower in the victory as the scored a first half goal off an assist from
Hannah Grandell (West Chester, Pa./Unionville). McKenna Mullin (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) worked hard between the pipes making five clutch saves including one on what was a great scoring opportunity in the opening five mintues of play to keep the normally high-powered Kutztown offense led by Emily Zwiercan off the scoreboard.
Wolfe is the eighth Golden Ram to find the back of the net in 2018 contributing to what has been a very balanced attack so far this season. West Chester has found an alternate source of offense this year as the backline has also proved dangerous as
Nikki Caffey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and
Julia Kirkpatrick (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) have accounted for three goals between the two of them as Caffey has two while Kirkpatrick has one.
Kendall Rich (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) is the leading scorer for West Chester so far in 2018 as she has four goals on the young season while Baxter is second with a pair of goals and two assists for a total of six points on the year.
Jenny Bail (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Deanna Laubach (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), and Olivia Muha (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) Â have all supplemented the offense scoring one goal of their own while Bail and Wolfe have also added assists to help lead West Chester. Mullin has played the lionshare of the time in goal as she has all but 25 minutes in goal so far this season playing to a record of 6-1-1 with four shutouts and a goals against average of 0.25. This is thanks in large part to the stinginess of the West Chester defense as they have allowed opponents an average of just 8.5 shots per game with only about half of those shots finding their way on goal.
Edinboro (2-7-0, 1-7-0 PSAC) enters play coming off a narrow 2-1 loss to Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon. Mercyhurst found the back of the net first scoring in the 21
st minute to give the Lakers an early 1-0 lead. This lead was extended in the 56
th minute when Maya Bauer extended the Lakers lead to 2-0. Marissa Shields found the back of the net for Edinboro in the 76
th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1 but this was all that Edinboro could muster in the loss. Anna Voelker worked hard in goal for the Fighting Scots making seven saves against 14 shots in the loss. Edinboro is currently riding a four-game losing streak with its last victory coming back on September 12
th against California (Pa.).
Danielle Chatten is the leading scorer for Edinboro in 2018 scoring four goals for eight points on the year while Rebecca Manns is second on the team with one goal and three assists for five points on the year. Four other Fighting Scots have also found the back of the net this year as Cameron Bujnoski, Brittnie Spithaler, Ellie Frania, and Marissa Shields all have one goal so far in 2018. Anna Voelker has battled in goal this season playing to a 2-7 record with one shutout and a 1.89 goals against average. Voelker's defense has allowed opponents to take an average of 14.3 shots per game, which plays a major role in the 1.89 goals against average.
After this game West Chester will come back east to prepare for a road matchup at Millersville on Wednesday afternoon with that game getting underway at 5:00 p.m.
