Top-Ranked West Chester Quiets No. 6 Adelphi, 7-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Katie Thompson (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) posted a hat trick and had a hand in six of seven goals as No. 1 West Chester downed No. 6 Adelphi, 7-0, Monday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

West Chester (16-0) left little doubt as to who was the favorite in a battle that featured the top-ranked team in the East Region and the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region after last week's NCAA regional polls were released. Adelphi (13-4) struggled to get anything going offensively and managed just four shots in the game.

How it happened:
  • Katie Thompson opened the scoring 1:18 into the contest and finished with three goals and three assists to lead the offensive attack. Her reverse chip into the top right corner of the cage was a highlight-reel effort for sure.
  • Kat Roncoroni (Lebanon Twp., N.J./Voorhees) scored a pair of goals and assisted on another while Caitlin Kelly (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) potted a pair of goals as well.
  • Caitie McNamara (Buderim, Australia) finished with three assists.
  • Adelphi didn't get a shot off until the fourth quarter, and by then, the Panthers trailed 7-0.

Inside the Box Score:
  • Freshman goalkeeper Claire Nielsen (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) made two saves to record her 16th win of the season without a loss. She now has eight shutouts with three more combined efforts in her first college season.
  • Five players accounted for all the scoring in the box score.
  • Adelphi goalie Stephanie Peragallo made 12 saves in the loss.

West Chester hosts No. 4 Kutztown on Wednesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown. A win over the Golden Bears would clinch first place in the PSAC standings and earn the Golden Rams a bye in the first round of the PSAC Tournament next month and the right to host the semifinals and finals.
