ERIE Pa. - West Chester University men's soccer's hopes to return to the NCAA National Championship game for a second consecutive year have been dashed as the Assumption Greyhounds defeated the Golden Rams 2-1 in double overtime. th minute of action. The score would remain 1-0 for the rest of the half. The Golden Rams and Greyhounds were even in almost every way, with the Greyhounds' goal being the difference. The Greyhounds led in first half shots five to four, while each team had three corner kick opportunities. Good made two critical saves on shots from the Greyhounds' offense, keeping the game at 1-0 going into the half.
Â
The Golden Rams were on offense for a majority of the second half, but it wasn't until the 87
th minute that
Vito Vincent (King of Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion) scored for the Golden Rams. The goal was Vincent's first as a Golden Ram and kept the team's playoff hopes alive. The Golden Rams outshot the Greyhounds 13-3 in the second half, with the goal by Vincent providing momentum going into overtime.
Â
The score remained 1-1 going into the second period of overtime. In the 106
th minute, Assumption scored the game-winning goal as Hernandez beat Good in a one-on-one situation.
Â
The Golden Rams wrap up their season with a record of 14-5-1, having only lost one game in regulation. The loss brings West Chester's NCAA Division II playoff record to 5-5, with an overall NCAA playoff record of 12-12. Assumption will move on to the second round where they will face off against Gannon University.
