Bloomsburg Edges West Chester in Atlantic Region Final

ALBANY, N.Y. - The West Chester University women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle, 2-1, against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competitor Bloomsburg University in the NCAA Tournament Atlantic Region final.

The Golden Rams, in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th year in a row, close out their 2019 season with a 14-6-2 record.

How it happened:
  • In the 20th minute, WCU senior Madison Baxter (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) took a long shot from the left side that got saved by Huskies goalkeeper Jenna Hawkins.
  • West Chester had another scoring opportunity in the 26th minute when PSAC East Division Athlete of the Year Jenny Bail (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) took a shot from the 18-yard line that soared wide of the goal.
  • In the 31st minute, sophomore Jenna Peters (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) scored a goal for the Golden Rams off of a long throw from junior Hannah Zach (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) to put West Chester up 1-0.
  • Less than a minute later, Bloomsburg responded as Bryce Watts scored for the Huskies to tie the game, 1-1.
  • With five minutes remaining in regulation, Bloomsburg's Nicole Verano scored the game-winning goal. 
Inside the numbers:
  • The Golden Rams outshot the Huskies during this match, leading 8-6 in the first half, and 6-5 in the second half.
  • West Chester and Bloomsburg played four times this season. The Golden Rams went 1-2-1 against the Huskies.
West Chester last played in the Sweet 16 in 2017 when it fell to Mercy College by way of penalty kicks.

Bloomsburg, ranked No. 6 in Division II, advances to the Elite 8 on Sunday to face the winner of Molloy College and The College of Saint Rose in Albany.
