Softball Splits with Molloy on Monday Morning

CLERMONT, Fl.- The West Chester University softball team (9-6) was back in action on Monday morning opposite another non-league foe in Molloy (4-7). West Chester captured game one 3-0 before dropping game two by a final score of 3-2.

Game One:
  • West Chester raced out to an early 1-0 lead during the home half of the first after Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) worked a leadoff walk, which enabled her to come around to score moments later thanks to a double into the left centerfield gap from Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to give the Golden Rams an early 1-0 lead.
  • In the third, West Chester grew its lead as Heidi McCollester (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) took the 2-2 offering down the right field line for a triple, which scored Garber and Emily Kim (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) to increase the lead to 3-0.
  • This lead was all Reilly Gearhart (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) (5-3) needed as the junior was impressive once again scattering just four hits and two walks while striking out eight to guide West Chester to its ninth-consecutive victory.
Game Two:
  • West Chester wasted little time in game two as the Golden Rams raced out to an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first thanks to an RBI single off the bat of McCollester that plated Hartman to give the purple and gold the early lead.
  • Molloy answered back with a run of its own during the home half of the second, which evened the score at 1-1 heading to the third.
  • In the fifth, Molloy scored another two runs to grab a 3-1 lead heading to the sixth.
  • In the top of the sixth, West Chester loaded the bases with just one out but the Golden Rams only managed to push one across, thus, cutting the deficit to just one (3-2) heading to the home half of the sixth.
  • West Chester threatened once again in the seventh inning of play but the Golden Rams were unable to push across the tying run in the 3-2 setback.
  • Kelly Tinsman (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) took the tough loss in this contest as she went six innings surrendering five hits and three runs (only one earned run) while also registering one strikeout in the defeat.
