Softball Sweeps Chestnut Hill; Lokey Logs 500th Career Victory at WCU

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – In need of just one win for Head Coach Diane Lokey to eclipse the 500-win plateau at West Chester, the Golden Rams (15-10) captured a pair of wins defeating the Griffins of Chestnut Hill (6-10)  by a final of 7-2 in game one and 7-1 in game two.

Game One: WCU 7 CHC 2
  • Jaime Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) staked the Golden Rams to an early 1-0 lead during the 3rd inning of play with an RBI single to left, which plated Tori McCoach (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell-Egan) to give the purple and gold the early lead.
  • Unfortunately, this lead was short-lived as Chestnut Hill struck back during the top of the fifth to even the score at 1-1.
  • In the home half of the fifth, West Chester added another run as Alisha Patel (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) scored off a fielding error on a ball hit by Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster) to give West Chester back the lead at 2-1. Klemas continued her big afternoon moments later as she doubled home Maseth to give West Chester a 3-1 lead.
  • Chestnut Hill answered back with a run of its own during the top of the sixth, which cut the West Chester lead to 3-2 heading to the home half of the inning.
  • In the home half of the sixth, West Chester tacked on another four runs thanks to a pair of RBI singles from Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Olivia Bernstein (Glenside, Pa./Abington) along with a fielder's choice from Reilly Gearhart (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and some crafty base running from Naiya Murrey (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) who managed to scamper home on a wild pitch, which gave West Chester a commanding 7-2 lead.
  • Kelly Tinsman (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) got the start in the circle for the second game in a row and she lasted four innings scattering just four hits and one run while striking out three in the no-decision. Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) (3-1) earned the victory in relief as she tossed the final three innings surrendering four hits and one unearned run while striking out a pair to pick up her second victory of the week.
Game Two: WCU 7 CHC 1
  • In the bottom half of the first, West Chester got out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single to right off the bat of Stump, which scored Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Klemas to give the purple and gold the early advantage.
  • West Chester tacked on another three runs during the home half of the second thanks to another two-RBI single from Klemas and a throwing error by Chestnut Hill starting pitcher Kaley Wise to take a commanding 5-0 lead to the third inning of play.
  • In the fifth, Chestnut Hill answered back with a run of its own via a solo home run over the left center field fence, which cut the lead to 5-1 heading to the home half of the inning.
  • In the home half, West Chester posted another two runs thanks to an RBI double from McCoach and an RBI groundout from Patel, which gave the Golden Rams a commanding 7-1 lead that they would never relinquish.
  • In the circle, Gearhart was sharp throughout the afternoon as she recorded her eighth win of the young season allowing just four hits and one urn while fanning a trio of Griffins en route to the victory.
