Softball Extends Winning Streak with Sweep of Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The West Chester University softball team (19-10) extended its winning streak to eight games on Sunday afternoon on the road at non-conference foe Jefferson (6-12). West Chester won game one 4-1 before taking game two 7-0.

Game One:

• In the first game of the afternoon, it was a steady offensive attack that powered West Chester to the victory over its hosts as the Golden Rams plated one run in four different innings to cruise to the victory.
• Heidi McCollester (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) got things started for West Chester during the first inning as she drove an RBI single to right, which scored Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster), thus, giving the purple and gold the early 1-0 lead.
• In the second inning, West Chester grew its lead thanks to an RBI single from Tori McCoach (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan), which scored Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown), thus, extending the lead to 2-0.
• In the third, Stump recorded an RBI single of her own as she singled back up the middle to plate Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and give the Golden Rams a solid 3-0 lead.
• Maseth added one more run for the purple and gold during the sixth as she drove a single to left center to score Naiya Murrey (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and extend the lead to 4-0.
• In the home half of the sixth, Jefferson got one back as the Rams scampered home on a wild pitch but this is all they would get in the 4-1 loss.
• Reilly Gearhart (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) (9-4) earned the victory in the circle for West Chester going the distance scattering just four hits and one run while striking out seven.

Game Two:

• West Chester waited until the top of the third to score its first run of the contest in game two as the Golden Rams finally broke the scoreless tie during the third when Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) singled home Maseth to give WCU the 1-0 lead.
• In the fourth inning, West Chester saw its lead grow as Olivia Bernstein (Glenside, Pa./Abington) registered an RBI groundout before an RBI single from Maseth extended the Golden Rams lead to 3-0.
• In the sixth inning, West Chester exploded for four runs thanks to four consecutive RBI singles and smart base running from Maseth, Hartman, Garber and McCollester to claim a commanding 7-0 lead.
• This was all the run support that Maegen Kavanagh (Easton, Pa./Easton) (3-2) would need in the circle as she was impressive for the Golden Rams scattering just four hits and one walk while striking out six to earn the game two victory.

West Chester will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon on the road at Wilmington with that doubleheader set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
