Softball Drops Season Opener Despite Seventh Inning Rally

DAHLONEGA, Ga Despite a comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh, West Chester softball (0-1) dropped its first game of the season to Southern Wesleyan (4-4), 4-2 on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth, when Southern Wesleyan scored one run following a leadoff triple.
  • Southern Wesleyan added three runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 4-0.
  • West Chester attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh as senior Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa. / Kutztown) hit a two-run double to score Jaime Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) and Katelyn Rittenbaugh (Donaldson, Pa. / Pine Grove).
  • The Golden Rams would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but could not connect to break the lead.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Senior pitcher Reilly Gearhart (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) pitched 4 1/3 innings while allowing one run on four hits.
  • Stump batted one for three on the day with one double and two RBI's.
  •  Senior Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) was one for three and hit a double for the Golden Rams.
 
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Maseth's double was the 45th of her collegiate career. She is now five doubles behind 2003 alum Beth Frey for the most in program history.
 
The Golden Rams are back in action at 6 p.m. as they face off against the University of Southern Indiana.
