West Chester Overcomes Eight-Run Deficit to Defeat West Liberty in Extra Innings

Box Score 1 GREENSBURG, Pa. The Golden Rams came back from an eight-run extra inning deficit to defeat the West Liberty Hilltoppers 14-13 on Thursday. West Chester improves to a 12-3 record following the victory while West Liberty now owns a 7-9 record on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • West Liberty kicked off scoring in the top of third, scoring three runs to take an early lead over West Chester.
  • The Golden Rams responded by cutting the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the first. Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove) hit an RBI double to left center field to score Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, N. J. / Seneca). Then, Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa. / Kutztown) hit an RBI single, scoring Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg) from third base.
  • Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) hit a bases loaded single scoring Jaime Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) in the bottom of the fourth. Melvin was the next to step to the plate and worked a walk to score Emily Kim (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright), giving West Chester a 4-3 lead.
  • A West Liberty home run tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
  • Runners were placed on second base starting in the eighth inning. After West Liberty scored their placed runner, West Chester scored Klemas on an RBI-single from Grace Aguilar (Frederica, Del. / Lake Forest) to force a ninth inning.
  • West Liberty batted around and scored eight runs in the top of the ninth, giving themselves a convincing 13-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
  • The Golden Rams may have been down eight runs, but that would not be the case for long. A leadoff home run from Garber (scoring Melvin, the placed runner) set the tone for the inning for the Golden Rams. Two batters later, Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) hit her own two-run home run scoring Kopinetz.
  • With West Chester down 13-9, Stump, Klemas, and Olivia Mock (Clifton, Va. / Paul V. Catholic) loaded the bases up as Aguilar stepped up to the plate. Aguilar batted in pinch runner Caroline Adams (Media, Pa. / Renaissance Academy) with a single, keeping the bases loaded for Hartman. Hartman and Haleigh Karcher (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) worked consecutive walks to score Klemas and pinch runner Kiley Watson (Perkasie, Pa. / Pennridge), bringing West Chester to a 13-12 deficit.
  • With the bases juiced and no one out, senior Bri Garber stepped up to the plate for the second time in the ninth. After working to a 1-2 count, Garber smacked a double into left center field, scoring Aguilar and Hartman to give West Chester the come-from-behind 14-13 victory in the bottom of the ninth.
