SHIPPENSBURG, Pa – The No. 20 ranked West Chester women's soccer team (5-1-1) saw its unbeaten streak come to a close in a tough 3-1 loss against the Shippensburg Raiders (3-5-1) on the road on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, West Chester applied steady pressure, taking 11 shots but the Shippensburg defense was up to the task, holding the Golden Rams scoreless through the opening half. Shippensburg, meanwhile opened the scoring early with a goal in the fifth minute of play to take a lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, Shippensburg opened the scoring with another tally in the 53rd minute to extend its lead to 2-0. Madison Bowman (Cohan Station, PA / Willamsport) trimmed the deficit in the 57th minute, as she scored the Golden Rams first goal of the game to cut the deficit to just one, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Raiders.
In the 70th minute, Shippensburg answered back with its third and final goal of the contest, which extended the lead to 3-1. Shippensburg held on defensively for the final 20 minutes to earn the upset victory over the Golden Rams.
In goal, Hayley McGee (Mechanicsburg, PA / Cumberland) made four saves over the course of the match to limit the Shippensburg offense.
Despite the setback, West Chester outshot its hosts by a 24-14 margin while also ending the contest with a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Rams return to Rockwell Field on Wednesday to take on Bloomsburg at 3:30 p.m.
