Box Score 2 BLOOMSBURG, PA - Sophomore catcher Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) led the way in the opener as West Chester split its PSAC East doubleheader on Thursday afternoon against host Bloomsburg. The Golden Rams won game one, 6-1, but lost game two, 5-2.
West Chester (8-2, 6-2 PSAC East) scored a total of eight runs and had 11 hits total for the doubleheader. Bloomsburg (5-11, 3-11) rallied in the nightcap to salvage the split.
GAME ONE
- In the top of first, sophomore Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) singled in Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa..Lampeter-Strasburg) to put the Golden Rams on the board, 1-0.
- Bloomsburg answered in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game 1-1.
- The game remained even until the sixth inning when Kopinetz stepped to the plate with two outs and a runner on third. Bloomsburg chose to pitch to the Golden Rams' slugger, who is currently second in the nation in home runs per game (5 in 8 games heading into the doubleheader). The sophomore catcher made the Huskies pay for that decision with a two-run blast to dead center field, giving the visitors a 3-1 lead it would not relinquish.
- In the seventh inning, a walk allowed Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) to score on a wild pitch and a double from senior Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to left field line ended the game with a 6-1 win for the Golden Rams.
GAME TWO
- The Golden Rams started off strong with a triple to left center field from Hartman to put them up 2-0 early in the second inning.
- Bloomsburg answered in the third with single, double and triple to extend its lead to 5-2 and eventually win the game.
INSIDE THE STATS | GAME ONE
- Kopinetz leads the team in home runs with six this season.
- Freshman Mary Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./ Lansdale Catholic) started the game for the Golden Rams only allowing six hits and throwing one strikeout. She improves to 3-1 on the season.
- Senior Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) closed the game for the Golden Rams picking up her first save of the season.
INSIDE THE STATS | GAME TWO
- Sophomore Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, NJ./Seneca) and junior Emily Kim (Bel Air, Md./ C. Milton Wright) each had a stolen base for West Chester.
West Chester is back on the WCU softball field on Saturday afternoon against the Bloomsburg Huskies once again. The games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
