WEST CHESTER, PA – Senior
Jaime Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) went a combined 5-for-7 with a home run in game two as host West Chester swept a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon on South Campus.
West Chester (10-2, 8-2 PSAC East) took three of the four games in the weekend series, following a split with Bloomsburg (5-13, 3-13) in Northern PA on Thursday. The Golden Rams claimed game one by a score of 9-1 in five innings, before taking the nightcap, 10-5, as well.
GAME ONE
- West Chester scored seven runs in the third inning to blow the game open. Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) hit an RBI double while Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Emily Kim (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each contributed run-scoring singles. Two more runs scored on wild pitches, and Katelyn Rittenbaugh (Donaldson, Pa./Pine Grove) had an RBI ground out.
- Senior Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) hit an RBI triple in the fourth. She also stole a base in the game.
- Freshman right-hander Mary Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) tossed a three-hitter to improve to 3-1 on the season. She allowed one run and walked two in five innings of work.
GAME TWO
- West Chester scored in each inning but the fifth. The Golden Rams got one in the first, two in the second and three in the third. That was followed by one in the fourth and three in the sixth.
- After falling behind 3-0 before even getting its first at bats, West Chester got RBI singles from Klemas, Garber and Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) to tie the game by the end of the second inning.
- Hartman had a RBI single in the third while Kim and Melvin each knocked in a run with fly balls to left field. Stump doubled in a run in the sixth and later scored on a ground out. Pinch runner Asia Barnard (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy).
- Senior righty Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) went seven innings in relief, allowing two runs on eight hits. She walked one and struck out one.
West Chester returns to action next Friday when it travels to Shepherd University for a showdown of the top two teams in the PSAC Eastern Division.
