West Chester Earns Split with Shepherd Tuesday Afternoon

Shepherdstown, WV - The West Chester University softball team (14-6) was back in action this afternoon against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contender, Shepherd University (22-9). The Golden Rams fell short in game one, losing to the Rams 4-3 but bounced back in game two to win, 13-6 in ten innings.
 
GAME ONE
  • West Chester ran out to an early lead with a single to shortstop from senior Jamie Klemas (South Brunswick, NJ./South Brunswick) in the top of the first.
  • Klemas stepped up to bat in the top of the third to hit a triple to right field, grab two RBIs and put the Golden Rams up 3-0.
  • The Rams answered in the bottom of the fifth with Allison Baker advancing on second on a throwing error to put Shepherd on the board.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Rams scored on singles from Baker, Nicole Purtell, and Leanne Brown to win the game for Shepherd, 4-3.
 
INSIDE THE STATS | GAME ONE
  • Freshman Mary Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) pitched seven innings and threw three strikeouts in game one.
  • Klemas had three RBIs as she leads the team with 26 RBIs on the season.
  • Fifth year Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) stole two bases for the Golden Rams.
 
GAME TWO
  • Klemas started out game two for the Golden Rams from a reach on a fielder's choice, putting WCU on the board 1-0.
  • Shepherd responded in the bottom of the second with a single to left field from Hannah Beeler to tie the game, 1-1.
  • During the third and fourth innings, the Rams scored on a double from Cameron Davis and a single by Purtell, advancing Shepherd's lead 4-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, Garber grabbed the RBI on a single to right field. Sophomore Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) singled to left field (2 RBIs) to end the inning tied at 4-4.
  •  With the game extending to extra innings, senior Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa/Kutztown) opened the eighth with a single to right field and collected 2 RBIs for WCU.
  • The Rams answered with a single from Purtell and an advance to second on an error to tie the game up 6-6.
  • The Golden Rams sealed the deal in the tenth inning by scoring six runs. Kopinetz got an RBI for WCU with a fly out to center field. Klemas doubled down the left line to bring in 2 RBIs and extend the Purple & Gold's lead to 9-6. West Chester went on to score four more runs on a single from Stump, advance on a wild pitch by sophomore Olivia Mock (Clifton, Va./Paul V. Catholic), single to center field from sophomore Grace Aguilar (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest), and Garber grabbed the last RBI of the afternoon from a hit by pitch run, ending the game 13-6.
 
GAME TWO | INSIDE THE STATS
  • WCU's pitching was a combination from freshman Summer Williams (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink), senior Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), and Picozzi for the win.
  • Kopinetz, Klemas, and Stump all had 3 RBIs in game two for the Golden Rams.
  • Garber had four hits for WCU in ten innings.
 
West Chester is back on WCU Softball Field on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader against Millersville. Games are scheduled to being at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
