MANSFIELD, Pa. - The West Chester University softball team (20-12) was back in action Wednesday afternoon against Mansfield (3-25) at Helen Lutes Field. The Golden Rams improve their overall season record to 20-12 and are now 16-12 in the conference.
GAME ONE
- Fifth year Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) opened up the top of the first with a fly out to center field allowing WCU to score its first run of the game.
- In the top of the second, sophomore Olivia Mock (Clifton, Va./Paul V. Catholic) reach on a fielder's choice and throwing error by Mansfield brought in another run for the Golden Rams. The Purple & Gold were able to bring five more runs home in the inning on a single from senior Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), single and double from sophomore Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, NJ./Seneca), and a reach on a fielding error from Garber.
- Garber doubled to center field in the top of the sixth to stretch the West Chester lead to 8-0.
- Senior Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) singled to second base to add one more run for the Golden Rams.
- The Mounties scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three singles and a double to end the game 9-6.
INSIDE THE STATS | GAME ONE
- Melvin and Garber both had two RBIs and totaled three stolen bases.
- Senior Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) pitched all seven innings, three strikeouts, and improves to 8-4 on the season.
GAME TWO
- The Golden Rams opened game two on top with a reach on a fielder's choice from Stump. On a wild pitch, the Golden Rams were able to bring in a run and end the first inning up, 2-0.
- In the top of the second, sophomore Grace Aguilar (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) singled to shortstop causing a Mountie throwing error and put another run on the board for WCU.
- Mansfield answered the bottom of the second with a ground out and RBI from Danielle Goff to make the score, 3-1 WCU.
- Sophomore Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) homered to center field to scored two RBIs and push the West Chester lead to 5-1.
- In the top of the sixth, scored two more runs on a single up the middle by Aguilar and fly out to right field from Melvin.
- The Mounties put their last run on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left field from Anastasia Berardi, ending the game 7-2 West Chester.
INSIDE THE STAT | GAME TWO
- Freshman Mary Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) pitched sixth innings, three strikeouts, and improves to 9-6 on the season.
- Kopinetz leads the team this season with nine home runs.
The Golden Rams are back at the WCU Softball Field on Friday afternoon against Shippensburg. The doubleheader games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
