Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Matter and Haughey Score Twice to Help Lead No. 5 West Chester Past Shepherd by a 5-0 Final

WEST CHESTER, Pa.-Faith Matter (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) and Kaitlynn Haughey (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) scored two goals each and Haughey added an assist to help lead No. 5 West Chester (6-0-0, 5-0-0) past Shepherd in convincing fashion by a final of 5-0.

West Chester applied heavy pressure to the Shepherd defense early and it did not take long for this pressure to pay dividends as West Chester scored the first goal of the game in the 17th minute when Faith Matter (Middletown, Pa/Middletown) scored off an assist from Jaqueline Hug (West Chester, Pa./Unionville).
West Chester doubled its lead moments later when Kaitlynn Haughey (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) buried a PK after being fouled in the box on what was a great scoring chance following a pass from Hug.
Throughout the half, West Chester continued to apply pressure, eventually ending the first half with a 2-0 lead and a 17-5 lead in shots along with an 8-2 lead in shots on goal. Shepherd did manage to end the first half with a 3-1 lead in corners.

West Chester picked up in the second half right where it left off in the first, extending its lead quickly as Haughey scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Victoria Pungello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) in the 52nd minute. Just 45 seconds later, West Chester scored again when Haughey sent a pass across the top of the box to Matter who took a long shot from above the box to extend the Golden Ram lead to 4-0.

In the 75th minute, West Chester nearly extended its lead to a season-high 5-0 after a Julia Raybold (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) header following a Nicolette Harrison (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) corner but the Shepherd keeper was able to punch it away just in time.

West Chester extended its lead moments later when freshman Mia Amen (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) picked off an errant pass in the midfield and hit a long shot over the keeper who was out of the goal to serve as a passing option, which allowed the Golden Rams to extend the lead to 5-0.

West Chester ended the game with an impressive 30-10 advantage in shots and 16-5 lead in shots on goal. Using the first half advantage it held in corners, Shepherd ended the contest with a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.

Hayley McGee (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) (6-0-0) kept her shutout streak intact, making five saves to limit the Shepherd offense throughout the afternoon. For Shepherd, Alayna Burgamy who was making just her second start of the season put forth a valiant effort, making 11 great saves to keep her squad in the game throughout much of the afternoon.

Up Next:

West Chester will have little time to revel in this afternoon's victory as the Golden Rams will need to quickly shift their attention to a matchup with rival and No. 14 Kutztown on the road on Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m.
