DAVIE, Fl.- Ann Carozza (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) was a three-event winner once again, sweeping the 100 & 200 fly along with the 100 free with a pair of NCAA "B" cut times in the process to help West Chester kick off the 2023 portion of its season in Florida against Nova Southeastern, Lynn, and Indian River State College. West Chester fell to Nova Southeastern by a 159-101 final but beat Lynn 180-80.
The afternoon started off with the 200 medley relay team, comprised of
Lila DiCarlo (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity), McKenzie Hemingway (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County), Ann Carozza (West Chester, Pa./East), and Sam Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) swimming a time of 1 minute and 46.18 seconds, to finish in second place.
For Carozza, this relay effort was just the start of another impressive afternoon in the pool for her as she followed up with a victory in the 200 fly in a time of 2:00.06. Carozza also earned a victory in the 100 free with a time of 50.73, which also serves as an NCAA "B" cut time. Carozza was also victorious in the 100 fly with a time of 54.58, which is another NCAA "B" cut time.
In the 200 free,
Mikayla Niness (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was third with a time of 1:55.23, while
Keeley Durkin (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) was seventh in 1:57.66. Ninesss also finished second in the 50 free with a time of 23.98, while Trumble was fifth in 24.70. Niness also finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:05.08, while Durkin was fifth in 5:13.86.
Sophie Gerhart (Spring Mills, Pa./Penn Valley) finished fourth in the 1000 free with a time of 10:35.68, while Durkin was fifth in 10:47.50.
Hemingway also registered a top-three finish in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:06.22 to finish third, while
Madelyn Koehle (State College, Pa./State College) was fifth in 1:06.88. Koehle followed this up with a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke alongside teammate
Lenya Ryan (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) as they each logged times of 2:27.24
DiCarlo finished fourth in the 100-back with a time of 1:00.35.
Danielle Stewart (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) led the way for West Chester in the 200 back, finishing fourth in 2:11.48, while DiCarlo was fifth in 2:12.75.
The 200 free relay squad wrapped up the meet for West Chester, finishing second with a time of 1:38.06 behind the efforts of Niness, Trumble,
Skylar Strunk (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights), and Hemingway.
