Softball Splits with ESU in PSAC East Clash

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.- Looking to keep its winning streak rolling, the West Chester softball team (18-11, 6-2) returned to action on Friday morning at East Stroudsburg (19-9, 7-3). West Chester dropped the first game of the afternoon by a final of 5-2 before bouncing back with a 5-2 win in the nightcap to pick up a split with East Stroudsburg.

Game One: ESU 5 WCU 2

Hailey Melvin (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) opened the scoring with a two-RBI double in the first to give the Golden Rams an early 2-0 lead.

East Stroudsburg answered quickly with a two-run home run in the home half of the first to even the score at 2-2.

This is how the score would stand until the third, when ESU pushed across two more runs via an RBI double and an RBI single to take a 4-2 lead into the fourth.

The Warriors took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Golden Rams in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2.

Makenzie Edwards (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) (3-4) got the start in the circle and took the loss after working the first 2.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three before exiting in favor of Danielle Ciliberto (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon). Ciliberto worked the next 2.2, surrendering one unearned run on two hits before Antonia Browning (Newark, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) entered and worked a scoreless sixth in the setback.

Paige Zigmund (10-2) was outstanding for ESU in the opener, tossing a complete game, allowing just the two first-inning runs on six hits while striking out four in the victory.

Game Two: WCU 5 ESU 2

West Chester threatened to take an early lead in game two, getting runners on second and third with two outs in the second inning before the Warriors worked out of trouble to keep the game scoreless.

ESU pushed across the game's first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. West Chester answered quickly in the fourth with an RBI single from Meg Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa/Pine Grove) to even the score at 1-1.

In the fifth, West Chester took its first lead of the game with an RBI single by Hailey Melvin, which plated older sister Madison Melvin (Tabernacle,N.J./Seneca), who had worked a walk to lead off the inning.

ESU evened the score in the sixth with an RBI double, tying the score at 2-2.

Wolfe came through for West Chester again in the top of the seventh, hitting a bases-clearing triple with two out in the inning to give the Golden Rams a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Browning got the start in game two and worked the first three innings, scattering one run on five hits while striking out one before being lifted in favor of Samantha Klug (East Norriton, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy). Klug (6-2) entered and worked the next four innings, surrendering just one run on two hits while striking out four to earn her sixth victory of the year.

Leigh Ann Jenkins got the start and was saddled with the loss after pitching the first six innings, surrendering four runs on 11 hits and two walks while also striking out a pair before exiting in favor of Maddy Pritchard, who finished out the seventh inning for the Warriors.
