West Chester Tops Assumption in Season Opener, 6-1

WORCESTER, MASS – It's why she came back for that fifth COVID year. She wanted another shot at the title, and she wants people to know she is ready to give it her best.

Grad student, Claudia Jaszczak (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown West) scored a pair of first-half goals and No. 3 West Chester did not look back with a 6-1 victory over No. 6 Assumption at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium Friday night.

Junior forward Jasmine Miller (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) also potted a pair of goals on the evening to bolster West Chester's offense. Olivia Quagliero (South Hampton, N.J./Seneca) also scored for the visitors.

The first half was all Golden Rams with the visitors outshooting their hosts 15-2 on the strength of eight penalty corners. Assumption did not have a penalty corner opportunity and played the majority of the half back on its heels trying to cope with West Chester's relentless pressure.

Junior forward Jasmine Miller (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) put the roadies on top first with a marker in the 10th minute off an assist from senior midfielder, Paige Wolfe (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East). Jaszczak tacked on a pair of unassisted efforts five minutes apart in the second quarter that opened up the contest, 3-0, at the break.

Miller notched her second of the game seven minutes into the second half when she teamed up with Wolfe once more. Miller collected the feed up ahead, spun in the middle of the circle, and blasted a shot into the near side giving West Chester a 4-0 advantage.

Quagliero made it 5-0 in the 42nd minute on an individual effort, before Assumption finally got on the board in the fourth quarter. The Golden Rams made it 6-1 with five seconds remaining off a penalty corner from Ella Shockley (Delmar, Del./Delmar). Quagliero and fellow Delmar teammate Laura Rodgers (Delmar, Del./Delmar) were on the assists.

Emerie Loftis (Glen Allen, Va./Trinity Episcopal) made three saves for her first college win in goal. Assumption's Paige Gillette made 11 saves in the loss.

West Chester continues it run through the New England states on Sunday at Saint Anselm at 1 p.m.
