ERIE, Pa.- The 18
th-ranked West Chester University men's soccer team (5-2-1) returned to action on Saturday morning at the home of the 19
th-ranked Mercyhurst (6-0-0) Lakers. West Chester ended the game even with its hosts in shots (7-7) but fell to the host Lakers by a 3-1 final on Saturday afternoon.
Mercyhurst struck first, scoring in the 28
th minute as Andreas Rossak found Jorge Tallada Torres for an early goal, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Despite trailing at the break, West Chester had applied steady pressure to Mercyhurst throughout the first 45 minutes, ending the half with a 4-3 lead in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corners.
In the second half, Mercyhurst added a goal in the 78
th minute before adding one more in the 87
th, courtesy of a penalty kick, extending its lead to 3-0 over the visiting Golden Rams.
Tommy Bodenschatz (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) ensured his side would not be shutout, coming through with a goal of his own in the 88
th minute, but the Mercyhurst defense stiffened for the final two minutes, quelling any thoughts of a late-game comeback by the Golden Rams.
West Chester ended the game with a 6-1 lead in corners and also tied Mercyhurst in both shots (7) and shots on goal (3) in the Saturday morning setback.
