MEET RESULTS
WEST CHESTER, PA – West Chester University won five events, but it was not enough to overcome Division I foe University of Pennsylvania, 183-115, in the regular-season finale for both programs inside Graham Natatorium Friday evening.
West Chester (3-6) swam with a lot of energy and confidence according to head coach
Steve Mazurek in its final tune-up for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships next month. For Penn (4-6), it is on to the Ivy League Championships at the end of February.
Mikayla Niness (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was a double winner Friday with top performances in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. She also led off the 400 free relay that finished up the night with a winning effort. She teamed up with
McKenzie Hemingway (Chestertown, Md./Queen Anne's County) Samantha Trumble (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) and
Keeley Durkin (Brookhaven, Pa./Sun Valley) on that relay win.
Durkin placed second in the 1000 free in 10:12.91 while
Caitlin Hamill (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) placed fifth with a time that moved her into the Top 8 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and means she will swim in the finals at night when the conference meet rolls around. Durkin also finished third in the 500 free.
Hemingway won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 3.31 seconds.
Madelyn Koehle (State College, Pa./State College Area) won the 200 breast in 2:16.60. She was runner-up to Hemingway in the 100 breast. Teammate
Lenya Ryan (Wilmington, Del./Mt. Pleasant) was second behind Koehle in the 200 in a time of 2:18.73 that is a new personal best. Ryan also put up a personal best in the 400 individual medley, finishing third in 4:29.46.
Sophia Gerhart (Spring Mills, Pa./Penn Valley Area) finished just ahead of Ryan in the 400 IM, placing second with a time of 4:25.44. Gerhart was also runner-up in the 200 butterfly, leading
Mallory Pardoe (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) and
Amy Masciulli (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) to the wall as the Golden Rams took second, third and fourth in the event. Pardoe finished third in the 100 fly with teammate
Isabella Kil (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) in fourth.
Trumble was runner-up in the 50 free with a 24.06 while
Skylar Strunk (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) was fourth in 24.25.
On the diving boards,
Alicia McHugh (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) was fourth off the 1-meter board with a score of 223.73.
Evie Altland (Middletown, Pa./Lancaster Country Day) and
Avery Taylor (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) were right behind in fifth and sixth. McHugh placed third off the 3-meter board (237.45) with Altland and Taylor fifth and sixth respectively.
West Chester now prepares for defense of its title at the PSAC Swimming Championships next month.
