EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.-Following a convincing win over Shippensburg to open PSAC East play, the 19
th-ranked West Chester University women's soccer team (2-1-0) took to the road on Saturday afternoon for a battle against rival East Stroudsburg (3-0-0). ESU scored first, breaking through in the 33
rd minute and the Warriors made this early goal hold up to post a 1-0 upset victory over the Golden Rams.
Despite outshooting East Stroudsburg in the first half, ESU was the leader at the midway point thanks to a goal in the 33
rd minute by Sydnie Wright off an assist from Natalie Schooley.
West Chester threatened to even the match at 1-1 just over two minutes into the second half as
Sarah Roesing (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) got a good look, but ESU goalkeeper Emmy Clarkson made an equally good save to preserve the one-goal advantage for at least a few more minutes.
Brielle Zink (Islip, N.Y./Islip) kept the pressure on the 53
rd minute but her chance went high.
Adriana Ryder (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) got off a pair of shots down the stretch but Clarkson was equal to the task both times, making excellent saves in both the 57
th and 84
th minutes of action to help the Warrriors hold on for a 1-0 upset victory over the Golden Rams.
Despite the setback, West Chester ended the game with a 7-6 lead in shots and a 4-3 lead in shots on goal, although East Stroudsburg led the way in corners, finishing the match with a 4-1 advantage in this category.
