DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.- Looking to run its winning streak to four in a row and season-opening unbeaten streak to five, the RV West Chester University men's soccer team (3-1-1) returned to action on Wednesday afternoon in non-league action vs. Mercy (3-0-1). Mercy opened the scoring early and never looked back, posting an impressive 4-0 victory over the Golden Rams.
The Mavericks opened the scoring early, scoring their first goal in the 12
th minute of play as Hugo Martin scored his first goal of the young season. This tally also came as the first goal surrendered by
Jaden Howard (Townsend, Del./Middletown), halting his season-opening shutout streak at 191 minutes.
In the 30
th minute, Johannes Tjostheim scored his team-best seventh goal of the campaign before adding his eighth goal (and the fourth of the match for Mercy) in the 54
th minute.
Before Tjostheim's eighth goal of the young season, Mercy scored a third goal late in the first half as Santiago Serrano came off the bench to score his first goal of the 2024 season.
Mercy ended the match with a slim 13-11 lead in shots and a 10-3 lead in shots on goal, although West Chester ended the match with an 8-4 lead in corners.
Despite suffering his first loss, Howard was strong in goal for the Golden Rams throughout the afternoon, making six tremendous saves to help slow the Maverick offense.
His counterpart, Eirik Elvestad, ran his season-opening shutout streak to 360 minutes and counting with three saves in the victory.
